NECAFS is hosting a webinar on Thursday, July 12 from 11:00am - 12:00pm Eastern time on the Alignment of Harmonized GAP and FSMA Produce Safety Rule. Register here and add the webinar to your calendar.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced the alignment of the USDA Harmonized Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Audit Program with the requirements of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act's Produce Safety Rule (FSMA PSR). This alignment is an effort by USDA and FDA to streamline FSMA PSR requirements for farmers. This means that the new Harmonized GAP audit checklist covers (is aligned) with the relevant components in the FSMA PSR. As a grower prepares for a Harmonized GAP audit, they will also be assessing their food safety practices as needed to comply with the FSMA PSR.
For more background information on this effort, please view the Produce Safety Educators Group webinar "Updates on the USDA Harmonized & USDA Harmonized Plus+ GAPs Audits" recorded on February 5, 2018.
Ken Petersen, Chief of the USDA-AMS Audit Services Branch, will present during the upcoming webinar. He will discuss specifics around the new Harmonized GAP checklist. Ken will provide some initial feedback on the successes, challenges and concerns seen in the field as audits are completed under the new checklist. Finally, current resources available to help growers, planned development of additional resources and next steps will be discussed. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the webinar.
